ONE BROWN GIRL'S QUEST FOR THE PERFECT BEAUTY PRODUCTS

Hey loves! I hope you all are well, and that everyone on the East Coast is staying safe and recovering from Hurricane Sandy. I, once again, need to apologize for my lack of posting. I took a two week intensive class that met from 9-5 every day, then had a very busy week closing on a home I had renovated… basically everything that could have went wrong, did! THEN, Hurricane Sandy hit and I was without power, water and elevator service for a week. Since I live on the 24th floor with my two pups this was not fun at all. Thankfully, things are pretty much back to normal, in my building at least.

While all of this was going on, it didn’t stop me from trying out some new products ;) . I started using Ole Henriksen’s Truth Serum Collagen Booster ($48 for 1 oz) a few weeks ago, every night. I had gotten a small sample over the summer from Sephora and tried it a few times, but found it too greasy for my skin. Now, though, the colder weather upon us has really dried out my skin and I was looking for something to use at night. It is described as a high potency Vitamin C complex that prevents and corrects signs of aging while producing brightness. It is an oil that you only need a TINY little bit of to use on your whole face, and it absorbs into my skin very quickly. I use a moisturizer over it every night. I am only 24 and don’t have many signs of aging yet, but I like the fact I am using a preventative product, although I can’t tell a difference yet I’m hoping years down the line it will be worth something. I do think this product has made my skin smoother and less dry, though. Also, the Truth Serum has calming properties that are for sensitive and irritation prone skin. And the fact that it is oil based but hasn’t led me to break out is a HUGE plus.

I am going to continue using this product. Since only a tiny bit is needed, this deluxe sample will last me a few months at least. Not sure if I will drop $48 for the full size. Why are most skin care products so pricey?! What do you guys think? Have you used this product? Do you like it? Do you pay these type of prices to keep your skin in tip-top shape? Talk to you all soon! XX

    Sample Product Reviews

Hey loves! I’ve recently realized that I have tons of samples from Sephora – due to my shopping addiction and my beauty rewards card :-/ – SO, I’ve decided to start reviewing them as I try them out. Now, they won’t be in depth reviews since in most cases I won’t have enough of the product to try out for a longer period of time. But, I will be able to tell you my initial reaction and if I am considering buying a full size version. Hopefully, it will give some of you a little push to try (or skip) a new product you’ve been wondering about.

Up first, I have Boscia‘s Oil-free Nightly Hydration ($36 for 1.4oz). I was excited to try this out because I don’t have any staples in my nightly regimen. Most recently, I have been using Night of Olay Firming Cream ($7.29 at my local CVS), which I love the smell of. It’s very moisturizing but also heavy, so I was happy when I first felt the Boscia lotion and felt the consistency was not as thick. The product advertises as “an oil free nightly moisturizer that provides weightless hydration, combats excess oil and refines the look of pores.”

I recently discovered BB Cream after getting my September Glossybox, which contained Missha’s M Perfect Cover BB Cream. I’ve been obsessed with it since the first time I used it, and have since ordered it in a shade darker (I looked a little washed out in #23). I have been using it every day, but didn’t really know exactly what it was so I decided to do some research…

BB (Blemish Balm/Base) Cream originated in Korea. It has been popular for years in Asia and is now making it’s way to the US markets. It is basically a tinted moisturizer meets foundation with a bit more skin-care benefits thrown in. Missha’s BB Cream advertises are giving it’s users an even and natural-looking coverage (like a foundation), as well as soothing and moisturizing their skin (like a lotion). It is also SPF 42 (wow!), so you can skip your usual SPF lotion.

Hey everyone! I’m excited to share the most recent Glossybox I received because I am absolutely THRILLED with the products. The last few have been kind of lackluster for me, so I didn’t even get around to posting them because I was so busy… but this month’s box restored my wavering faith in the monthly beauty box subscription.

          I’m still here!

          Guys,

I have been absolutely horrible about updating this lately, but let me explain why… Besides having to get tons of things done for work, I have been SO busy apartment hunting in the city (which if you’ve ever done, you know it’s an absolute nightmare) and subsequently moving. I’m now all moved in my new place and am loving the amazing view of the NYC skyline. Now that my life feels organized again – I have much more free time to get back to my beauty addiction ;) New posts to come soon and regularly! xx

            Organizing my Makeup!

            Just a quick little post:

I’d been eyeing this train case Sephora has online for a while now, and finally broke down and purchased it because my makeup is literally exploding from my vanity and drawers and the OCD in me had enough! I’m so happy with the train case, it fit all my makeup and I actually have some extra space for some new products. Woohoo!

              Birthday Beauty

For those of you who don’t know, my birthday was last Sunday – I turned 24, yahoo! One of my best friends who knows what a beauty addict I am, gave me a gift card to Sephora and I want to share quick reviews of the products I purchased thanks to her! Here it goes…

              1. Tend Skin Liquid (roller edition, $17) I really can’t say enough great things about this product. I’ve known about it for years, but for some reason never had the desire to purchase it. Before I get ahead of myself, let me explain what this product is… it is a skin care solution for razor bumps/burns and ingrown hairs. And, as a brown skinned girl with dark hair, I NEEDED this product! I have seriously sensitive skin, and even gentle shaving irritates me, especially my bikini line and under my arms. This product was literally a lifesaver and I am kicking myself in the head wondering why I waited so long to purchase it?! I roll it over my problem areas twice a day (make sure your skin is dry!) and I have seen all my razor bumps and ingrown hairs DISAPPEAR in a matter of days! My skin is smoother and I feel much more confident. I would HIGHLY recommend this product for anyone who is in a similar situation and looking for a product that works!

              2. Bite Beauty – Superfruit Butter ($18) As much as I like the way lipgloss makes my lips look, there is nothing better than the way chapstick makes them feel! I am always looking for new lip balms and chapsticks to try out, and I am very picky about the formula… I don’t like them too sticky, too waxy, etc… This Bite Beauty product was definitely a bit pricey but I really liked the fact that the product was made with real acai, blueberry, cranberry AND pomegranate! Every fleck of color you see in the balm is actually real fruit! When I tried this out, I was happy to feel that my lips were moisturized – it has a very nourshing and conditioning formula. The only downside is that for a germaphobe like me, I hate having to stick my finger into the pot to get some of the balm. I wish they would come out with a tube version of this product, then it would be my absolute favorite chapstick ever!

              3. Soap & Gory – The Righteous Body Butter ($18) Sigh… I really dislike having to write negative reviews, and I always try to find the positive in products, but this one really failed me! I was excited to try out a higher-end body lotion because I never have before. This Soap & Glory moisturizer boasts an award winning formula with softening shea butter and aloe vera. There was nothing wrong with the formula itself, but there was nothing superb about it either. It moisturized decently. However, the scent was SO strong and overpowering! I gave it a chance, hoping the smell would wear off after a bit but a few hours went by and the smell was still as strong as when I first put it on. It was so overwhelming it gave me a headache and I started to feel nauseous – I actually had to get in the shower and wash it off to get rid of the scent! Now, I am a little more sensitive to smells than the average person, but I never thought I was super sensitive. Needless to say, although the formula might work well, I couldn’t get over the scent long enough to give it a chance and this product will unfortunately be returned! I think I will just stick to my Aveeno lotion from Duane Reade :)

                Hey guys,

Hope you all are doing well. I personally cannot believe how fast August is flying by. I am excited for autumn to get here, though, because it is my favorite season! Anyway, I have been thinking of something as of late and am hoping some of my fellow beauty bloggers can help me figure this out. I realized that I don’t really have a night time routine for taking care of my skin. I always wash my face – usually with Philosophy‘s Purity wash – but I don’t have any creams or toners or anything else that I swear by. I’m only in my mid 20′s, so I don’t think I need to be using any harsh anti-aging products yet, but I’m curious to ask all of you: What are YOUR night time routines? Do you have a night time beauty regimen or product you swear by? I’d LOVE to know, so please share. I can’t wait to hear them all! XX

To say I’m obsessed with bronze, shimmery eye shadows is an understatement. So, of course I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to pre order Mally’s newest line of shadow sticks off QVC. The Age Rebel Waterproof Shadow Stick Duo ($30 for 2) is described as “creamy, velvety-soft shadow glides on smoothly and imparts intense color that stays all day without fading.” And, it is just that. We all know I am a huge fan of Mally, but because of that I am also extra critical of her products. I was never the biggest fan of her original Shadow Stick Duos because I found them too dry and they still creased on my extra oily eyelids despite claims to the contrary.

Let’s face it, for most of us darker skinned gals, the dark circles under our eyes are a big problem! This is very true for me, and concealer is most definitely the one item I never like to leave home without. However, I have a hard time finding a color that matches my skin well… most shades are either too light and show up too prominently under my eyes, but if I go a shade darker the color usually becomes to orangey.
